More Free Flex Training!

Did you miss your opportunity to sign up for the Free Flex Training for ColdFusion Developers taking place today in Washington D.C.?

Well, you're in luck! They added another date in D.C. -- you can now attend on December 17th. You better sign up quickly; I bet this one will sell out too!

Thanks to astute reader dsmith for keeping an eye on this and letting me know!

Please Register for December's Meeting

We're trying out something new. In order to get a good headcount and approximate how much food to get, please register for our December meeting.

This is strictly for the purpose of approximating food need, so if you're not sure if you can attend, or just not sure yet, then please wait until closer to the event to register. "Tickets" are free and there are more than enough for everyone, but they will only be available until 2:00pm on December 10th.

If you do register and then later need to cancel, please email manager@phillycfug.org before 2:00pm on December 10th, so that I can cancel your ticket for a more accurate head-count.

Thanks for your help!

UPDATE: There is no need to print the tickets you get from EventBrite for this meeting. They aren't required for entry -- we won't be checking them, and you'll be putting trees to waste. So just don't print it!

Anniversary, Connect Recording, and More...

Did you know it's our 10-year anniversary as an organized User Group? In that time, ColdFusion has been owned by Adobe, Macromedia, and even Allaire. I don't have any official records of when the group met for the first time, but our best estimate is in mid to late 1999. When our group was formed, ColdFusion at version 4.5. What a long way we've come! To help celebrate the milestone, we hope you'll come to next month's meeting... there will be cake!

Also? I have door prizes to give away! Books! Software! Hugs! ... Maybe not hugs... And as usual, we'll have free pizza and soda. And of course, if your company or organization would like to sponsor these refreshments, the group and I would be extremely grateful and happy to return the favor!

A couple of people have reached out to me to let me know that they won't be able to attend the next meeting, but that they could really benefit from the content. Well, you're in luck! Or you might be, as long as I don't screw up!

I'm going to attempt to record the meeting via Adobe Connect, and publish it here afterward; to be watched by anyone at any time, anywhere. It will be my first attempt at recording a presentation with Connect, so I can't promise it will go smoothly; but you have my word that I will try!

If possible, I will also try to get the URL posted (and tweet it) before the meeting starts, so that you can attend from afar in real time, even if you can't make it into the city. Hopefully this will help our more suburban members participate, but unfortunately you must be present to win a door prize. All the more reason to come!

Next Meeting: Installing multiple versions of ColdFusion together

Date: Thursday, December 10th
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm EST
Location: UPenn, Jon M. Huntsman Hall. 3730 Walnut Street, or near 36th/37th st Trolleys
Room: F90 (in the "Forum" (basement) level)
Speaker: Daria (Laura Norris), Free Library of Philadelphia

Daria will show how to set up your development environment to use CF9 & CF8 (or even CF6 or 7) at the same time using ColdFusion's multi-server configuration option. This can be useful when you have several projects that have different code level requirements, or just to play with new features before you can develop your production apps with them. She will also cover how to connect the different ColdFusion instances to CFBuilder. This will be a BYOL (bring your own laptop) session that will allow you to follow along and ask questions. If you can't bring a laptop, that's ok too. Come prepared to learn more about managing the services that CF installs and how to get the most performance out of your development environment.

To prepare for the meeting:

  • Install CFBuilder, if you haven't already
  • Bring the appropriate Installation files for at least 2 versions of ColdFusion (versions 6.1 and later) that you want to install together on your laptop. Versions 8 and 9 can both be downloaded from Adobe (scroll to the bottom of the page for version 8)

Currently a full time web developer for the Free Library of Philadelphia, Daria has been working with ColdFusion for 13 years and has been an independent consultant since 1997. She recently began a CF blog about her journey to Object Oriented programming and tweets about CF and library related topics as @cfGothChic.

Free Flex training geared for ColdFusion Developers

I was going to post this tomorrow to try and space out blog posts to at most once a day, but the lead time before the event is pretty short, and twitter, facebook, etc. are all abuzz about it, so I figure it's better to get the information in your hands and apologize for flooding your inbox. I'm sure things will slow down at some point, but for now I'm sorry!

Have you been wanting to learn Flex but don't have the time to figure it out yourself or the budget for training? Likewise, are you already familiar with Flex 2 or 3 but interested in learning what's new in Flash Builder 4 and Flex 4 in a hands-on full day of training with Adobe staff like ColdFusion product manager Adam Lehman?

Well then today is your lucky day! Adobe is providing a free full-day, hands-on Flex training course specifically designed with ColdFusion developers in mind.

Unfortunately there's no Philly date, but you can attend in Washington DC on November 20th, and as luck would have it, this is the session that Adam Lehman will be at. I apologize for not giving more notice, but I just got notification myself last night.

Sign up before all of the seats are taken!

Reminder: Flash Camp Philly this Saturday!

This is just a reminder that Flash Camp Philly is this Saturday, November 7th. The content looks like it's going to be great -- certainly a steal for $45, or $22 for students. For more information, the schedule, list of topics and speakers, check out the official website.

This is a great opportunity to expand on your Flash or Flex skills, or even just get started. To quote right from their FAQ:

I am new to Flex, Flash, AIR, etc, is this event for me?
Absolutely. This event will provide an opportunity for you to learn about Flex, Flash and AIR development as well as give you an opportunity to network with other developers in your area. Some sessions will be for beginners, and other sessions will be for intermediate developers. Everyone has the opportunity to learn at this event.

I'm planning on going, and I hope to see you there!
