CFUnited 2010: Early Bird Ends Soon!

You've only got 3 days left to get the lowest possible price for CFUnited 2010!

I didn't have the pleasure of attending last year, so I'm not familiar with the Landsdowne Resort, but I've been to CFUnited a few times prior to that and always found it to be beneficial for training, researching what I should learn next, and of course networking. It also doesn't hurt that you get to spend a few days hanging out with a bunch of like-minded geeks in such a fun and diverse location as Washington D.C.

I'll be there, and I hope you will too. Early Bird registration prices end on January 8th, so today is the day to prod your boss and let him or her know how much you want to go! And don't forget, as a member of our user group, you get $50 off of the registration fee!

More Free Flex Training!

Did you miss your opportunity to sign up for the Free Flex Training for ColdFusion Developers taking place today in Washington D.C.?

Well, you're in luck! They added another date in D.C. — you can now attend on December 17th. You better sign up quickly; I bet this one will sell out too!

Thanks to astute reader dsmith for keeping an eye on this and letting me know!

Free Flex training geared for ColdFusion Developers

I was going to post this tomorrow to try and space out blog posts to at most once a day, but the lead time before the event is pretty short, and twitter, facebook, etc. are all abuzz about it, so I figure it's better to get the information in your hands and apologize for flooding your inbox. I'm sure things will slow down at some point, but for now I'm sorry!

Have you been wanting to learn Flex but don't have the time to figure it out yourself or the budget for training? Likewise, are you already familiar with Flex 2 or 3 but interested in learning what's new in Flash Builder 4 and Flex 4 in a hands-on full day of training with Adobe staff like ColdFusion product manager Adam Lehman?

Well then today is your lucky day! Adobe is providing a free full-day, hands-on Flex training course specifically designed with ColdFusion developers in mind.

Unfortunately there's no Philly date, but you can attend in Washington DC on November 20th, and as luck would have it, this is the session that Adam Lehman will be at. I apologize for not giving more notice, but I just got notification myself last night.

Sign up before all of the seats are taken!

CFUG Meeting THIS Thursday!

Sorry for the delayed post, but our next meeting will be THIS thursday, July 10th at Huntsman Hall at Wharton. This week I will be presenting on the Swiz Framework for Flex development. Swiz was built out of my own experiences with many large scale Flex projects and what I have felt to be a laking in other major Flex frameworks. Swiz aims to be simple and effecting, offering developers tools to build Flex applications in a true MVC paradigm. You can read more about Swiz at http://code.google.com/p/swizframework/.

This weeks meeting will also be a joint meeting with the Philadelphia Flex user's group. I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Flex Builder 3 Requirements

FlexGot an email today from a CFUG member inquiring about what you really need to get started with Flex. He kindly included a list of items that are very unclear on the Adobe site, so I figured I'd summarize here.

Starting, unfortunately, with the download page.

What you should download: Flex Builder 3 Professional. It'll clock in at over 400MB, not the advertised 169. Don't have a clue where they got that number from.

What you don't need to download: anything else, INCLUDING the Flex 3 SDK. That's for folks who don't need the development environment or the charting tools. In all likelihood, that's not you (today).

On the system requirements page, I've crossed off the stuff you don't need to trouble yourself with on day 1, using the standalone version of Flex Builder:

FLEX BUILDER 3 FOR WINDOWS (STANDARD AND PROFESSIONAL)

  • Intel® Pentium® 4 processor
  • Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista® Home Premium
  • 1GB of RAM (2GB recommended)
  • 500MB of available hard-disk space (additional 500MB required for plug-in configuration)
  • Java™ Virtual Machine: Sun™ JRE 1.4.2, Sun JRE 1.5 (included), IBM® JRE 1.5, or Sun JRE 1.6
  • Eclipse™ 3.2.2 for plug-in configuration (Eclipse 3.3 recommended for Windows Vista)
  • Adobe® Flash® Player 9 software*
  • BEA Workshop 10.1
  • IBM Rational Software Architect 7.0.0.3 (Eclipse 3.3 plug-in configuration only)

Odds are you already have a decent JVM if you've been doing CF development already. Flash Player will be installed by the FB installer, so scratch that too.

Eclipse is not the easiest thing to get used to if you're accustomed to Dreamweaver or HomeSite (that's putting it mildly!). Hope this helps! Feel free to ping manager@phillycfug or drop a comment if you have any other questions.

Building your first data management application with ColdFusion and Flex

My friend Brian Szoszorek has a new article on the Adobe Developer Center on building your first Flex 3/ColdFusion 8/LCDS app. LCDS is an awesome technology that most CF folks don't understand and wouldn't know how to get started with. Think "real time synchronous data exchange." Read this article and get yourself over the first-time hurdle – from there I'm sure you'll start to see lots of applications you could use this technology for!

Anyone interested in putting together a presentation on this topic?

30onair

One of the things we'll be doing tonight is getting video feedback from attendees, hopefully finding some content either a) good enough or b) funny enough to post here: http://30onair.com/.

Watch some now and start thinking creatively!

Adobe AIR Bus Tour coming to Philadelphia

As blogged by Rob Hall this morning, the Adobe AIR bus tour is coming to the Franklin Institute!

AIR is the official name for the platform formerly known as Apollo, the cross platform desktop runtime for rich internet applications built in HTML or Flex/Flash. It's awesome that we warranted a stop – so now all you need to do is show up!

A free event – at the Franklin Institute – with snacks and drinks on Adobe. Who wouldn't want to go?

Sign up here…you better do it soon as it's likely to fill up pretty fast! See you there!

360Flex Call for Speakers

A request from the conference organizers:

Hello there,

We're looking for you to help give direction to the session talks at 360|Flex Seattle, August 13-15, 2007. We invite you to submit your ideas by May 1, 2007. The sooner you submit the idea, the better the chance it'll be yours. Wouldn't that suck to have some one snag your topic due to procrastination?

If you're thinking of pulling out a canned preso that you've used at MAX or CFUnited, that's fine, but we did get a lot of feedback from attendees who voiced disappointment at "It was the same thing I saw at MAX and UG meetings, over and over. I want new info!" So if you find yourself surrounded by an angry mob two minutes into your presentation, don't say we didn't warn you. Note: If your session is accepted and is tied to your commercial product, you're company must have a sponsorship level with an expo spot and your description will have this blurb: "This session discusses utilizing a commercial 3rd Party product."

Speaking of presentations, code is good. People like to see code, so feel free to mix it in with your presentations. For those of you working on products that are built on top of Flex, we welcome you to utilize this format for your session. "Behind the scenes: Lessons learned while making xxxxx"

One thing that attendees find incredibly important is having the presentation materials before hand. If you sign up for a session, we'll need that preso, code zip, etc. by early July so we can burn them all to a CD. Don't be alarmed, if you need to change your preso a little after it's burned, that's fine. We'll provide a PowerPoint and Keynote template too. As for blog links, we'll automatically be adding them to your bio and/or session description.

Our Tracks for 360|Flex Seattle will be: Components (Development, use, etc) Application Development (building enterprise apps, using apollo, Apps built with Flex) Integration (.NET, Ruby, Java, FDS, etc) *Apollo sessions will be mixed into each track as applicable.

The classroom track will be comprised of the following: 1 day flex basics 1 day creating custom components 1 day building apollo apps

If you are interested in teaching one of these classes, please let us know.

Send your questions, suggestions and ideas to Info@360flex.com as soon as you can, to get your spot locked in. Feel free to pass this email to others in your office as we're trying to limit the spam to one per company.

Thank you, The 360Flex Committee
